In-hospital resuscitation Flashcards
Within what time frame should defibrillation be attempted?
3 minutes
What is the first step in adult in-hospital resuscitation?
Ensure personal safety
What is the second step in adult in-hospital resuscitation?
Check patient for a response
-shake and ask are you alright
What do you do if the patient responds?
Urgent medical help is required
- consider who to call
- ABCDE
- prepare for SBARD
What do you do if the patient doesn’t respond
Shout for help
Turn the patient on to their back
open the airway using head tilt chin lift (with MILS if there is a suspected cervical spine injury)
Keep the airway open- listen and feel for 10s and check for carotid pulse
What do you do if there is a pulse?
Urgent medical help is required
What do you do if there is no pulse?
Start CPR
If alone leave the patient to go get help
Use whatever equipment you have available for ventilation
Apply defibrillator as soon as possible
What is the ratio for interrupted compressions?
30:2
What is the correct position of the hands?
Lower half of the sternum
What are the components of effective chest compressions?
- depth 5-6cm
- rate 100-120 min
- adequate recoil
- take the same amount of time for compression and release
-minimal hands off
How often should the person giving the chest compressions switch?
every 2 mins or sooner if needed
What is the inspiratory time?
1 second
What can wave form capnography be used for?
- confirming placement of tt
- monitor the quality of CPR
- an indicator of ROSC
- A prognostic indicator
What changes once the patient has been intubated?
Continuous chest compressions
Ventilation at 10 breaths per minute
What do you do once the defibrillator is applied?
Pause briefly for rhythm check
