Improve Flexibility Flashcards
Use the concept of re-booting when one gets stuck on a problem. If a strategy isn’t working, don’t get fixated – – take a break and reboot
Teach calming strategies during reboot breaks such as deep breathing, taking a walk, doing mindfulness activities, listening to a favorite song, or doing Push ups
Teach your children feeling vocabulary to help them label their feelings when they are stuck
Teach self talk and thought stopping techniques for when your child gets stuck. For example change ’should’ statements to sometimes statements.
Read stories about children who are flexible and discuss them with your kids
Make small, manageable changes and teach your children how to cope with them. This will prepare them for bigger situations.
If a child has a meltdown about a change, calm them down and discuss the issue later and ask how we could do it differently next time
