Who is Hippias?
- Hippias was the last tyrant of Athens, ruling from 527 - 510B.C. Under his rule Athens prospered but after the assassination of his brother, he became a harsh and strict ruler leading to his exile.
- After he was exiled he went to Persia and revealed the operations of Athens in hopes the Persians would conquer the city and place him back in power.
Who is Hippocrates?
- He was born around 460 B.C on Kos
- The Hippocratic Corpus contains dozens of works that are attributed to Hippocrates but it’s likely not written by him but inspired by him.

Who was Anaximander (b. 610 B.C)? What did he believe?
- He was a student of Thales. He agreed with Thales that water was the definition of cold and wet and was therefore connect to the elements of air and earth but could not be connected with fire.
- Anaximander therefore believed that there was an infinite property that was unknown to man that contained all other elements of the universe.
What was Thales (625 - 545 B.C) theory about the universe?
He believed that all things are full of gods and that water was the arche (the most basic element of the universe).

Who is Anaximenes (fl. Ca 548/7 B.C)? What did he believe to be true regarding the properties and the universe?
- Anaximenes was a student of Anaximander.
- He believed that the elements were all related to each through levels of density. The elements are related to each through a linear fashion. Through the process of rarefaction, there is movement upwards and through the process of condensation there is movement downwards on the list. He believed the basic element of the universe is air.
Who is Socrates (469 - 399 B.C)? What is he most known for doing in philosophy?
- Socrates was an Athenian philosopher. He was a wealthy citizen, married with children. He was very well known but didn’t receive recognition through politics but through speaking at the Agora.
- He engaged in philosophical dialect and he, individually, changed the direction of western philosophy. He was most interested in ethics, questions of good and bad and right and wrong.
Who was Plato (ca. 429 - ca. 347 B.C)? What was he most known for?
- Plato was a student of Socrates.
- He wrote many dialogues with Socrates being the main character in most but over his time of writing, he began putting his own ideas into the mouth of Socrates.
- He created the “academy” which was a school and a place for thinkers.
What was the Academy?
It was an institution created in 385 B.C by Plato as a place for thinkers.
