Important Dog Viruses Flashcards
What is canine distemper (Paramyxovirus)
- a highly contagious disease affecting canines
- affects domestic & wild canines & ferrets
- single stranded RNA virus
how is paramyxovirus transmitted
- aerosol (most common)
- shared food/water bowls
- transplacental (mother to fetus)
What are the acute & chronic forms of paramyxovirus
acute: high mortality rate
chronic: skin thickining, eye, lung, brain, gut, and vision problems
what are 3 clinical signs of paramyxovirus
- Respiratory signs & intestinal signs
- pneumonia - nervous tissue
- immunosuppression
how are teeth and eyes affected by paramyxovirus
Teeth: Enamel hypoplasia
- divits in teeth
- attacks enamel
Eye: lacrimal duct injury
-attacks tear duct
what does myelin do
insults the axon for normal nerve signal transduction
What is Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH) / (CAV-1)
infects dogs, wild caids, bears
infects liver, kidney, and endothelial cells
how is ICH transmitted
animal - animal contact
what are clinical signs of ICH
- High fever
- Abdominal pain
- neurological signs (seizures)
- blue eye
What is infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough)
- highly infectious
- effects respiratory epithelium
- caused by canine adenovirus 2 and paramyxovirus
- it is a dry cough that can lead to bronchopneumonia
Why use CAV-2 in vaccine when CAV-1 is much more pathogenic
CAV-2 does not have as harsh side effects and protects against cross transmission
What is Parovirus
- small virus, single stranded DNA
- affects wild & domestic canids
- almost identical to feline panleukopenia virus
- can last in enviroment 5-9 months
- extremely hard to get rid off
What are the three forms of Parovirus
- Intestinal
- destroys epithelium - Cardiac
- heart failure - Neurological
- inflammation of the brain
