Importance of MIS Flashcards
Bell’s Law?
New class of computers makes a new industry every decade
Leads to new platforms, industries, networks, and information systems.
What is Moore’s Law?
The number of transistors per sq inch on an IC doubles every 18 months
This leads to new devices, applications, companies, etc.
What is Metcalfe’s Law?
Network value equal to the square of number of users connected to it.
dot com boom in the 90s led to more people
What is Neilsen’s Law?
Network connection speeds for high-end users will increase by 50%
What is Kryder’s Law?
Storage density on magnetic disk increases exponentially. Digital Storage is very important.
What are non-cognitive skills?
Abstract reasoning, Systems thinking, Collaboration, Ability to experiment
What is abstract reasoning?
Ability to make and manipulate models.
What is systems thinking?
Ability to model the components, connect inputs and outputs among those components into a sensible whole that reflects structure of the scenario.
Ability to discuss, illustrate, critique systems; compare alternatives; apply different systems in different situations
What is collaboration?
Two or more people working together to achieve a common goal
What is the ability to experiment?
Making a reasoned analysis of an opportunity; envisioning and developing solutions, evaluate the possibilities that look the most promising with available resources.
What is MIS?
Information System that produces information, it cannot be bought
Information technology on the other hand can be bought. It is used to produce information.
What is the goal of MIS?
Managing IS to achieve business strategies
What are the 3 key elements?
Information systems, management and use, strategies.
What are the five components of an information system?
Hardware, software, Data, Procedures, and People.
