Implantation Flashcards
What happens in the endometrium at the time of implantation?
Inner cells of the blastocyst organise into the inner cell mass (embryoblast)-gives rise to the embryo proper, the body of the offspring
What do the cells of the wall of the blastocyst do?
Develops into the trophoblast, becomes supporting structures of the embryo
what do trophoblast cells do?
Send out extensions, microvilli- which invade the endometrium
what does the endometrium do?
Growth surrounds the blastocyst- resulting in implantation into the lining area
what does trophoblast secrete?
The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)
what does HCG do?
Maintains the corpus luteum for production of hormones during early pregnancy
How is the placenta formed?
From cells that surround the embryo and cells from the endometrium
What is the role of the placenta?
To exchange nutrients waste and gases between mother and embryo
Anchors embryo to wall of uterus
