Implant Placement Flashcards

1
Q

Instructor: How do you place the implant?

A

Trainee: I position the implant so it sits securely on the genioglossus like a saddle on a horse, with the paddle electrodes aligned in the premade pockets over the inclusionary branches and the antenna pointing towards the mandible. The implant body lies flat on the muscle without touching the mandible

Q

Instructor: What are the critical instructions to follow when handling the implantable stimulator (IS) during the procedure?

A

Trainee: I will handle the IS using fingers or blunt instruments on the reinforced frames or main body, avoiding sharp tools, retractors on shoulders of the IS, or twisting the paddles. Bipolar cautery will only be used after the IS is placed to prevent damage.
