implant design and characteristics Flashcards
What are the 3 parts which make up the body design of an implant?
- The Endosseous Part - lies within the bone.
- Transmucosal Section - lies in the soft tissues between the bone and oral cavity.
- Prosthodontic Interface
What is the primary function of an implant?
To serve as anchorage for prosthodontic reconstruction.
What is the definition of an abutment?
Serves as support/retention for a dental prosthesis.
What are one-piece implants?
Implants that provide all or part of the prosthesis platform.
What are 3 features of a one-piece implant?
- Transmucosal section which extends into the oral cavity.
- Fixed neck design.
- Built-in emergence profile.
What is a two-piece implant?
Implants where the prosthodontic platform is provided by a separate abutment component.
Where is the two piece implant designed to stop?
At bone level.
In what areas of the mouth would a two-piece implant be useful in?
In sites with limited dimensions and aesthetic concerns.
What are the 2 types of implant connection?
Internal and External Connections.
Internal connections vary from straight-sided to tapered. What is the advantage of a tapered internal connection?
- Greater intimacy of fit to the abutment.
- Provides greater stability under load.
External connection implants generally offer a flat shoulder for a butt fit against the abutment. What are some potential disadvantages of this?
Less precision of abutment fit and stability under load.
How far above the bone crest does the prosthodontic interface sit in one-piece implants?
2-3mm
What is the distance to the bone crest from the prosthodontic interface in one piece implants known as?
Vertical Offset
What type of connection is created when the implant and abutment have matching diameters?
Butt Joint
When a 2 piece implant contains an implant and abutment with non-matching diameters, what is this known as?
Horizontal Offset
