Sepoys were Indian soldiers that revolted against the British. Britain then took direct control over India
What is extraterritoriality? Where, specifically, did this term apply?
Foreigners were tired for crimes by their own countries not China
What are “Spheres of Influence?” Which countries fought for control of China? Why?
Areas of China that certain countries could trade in. Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and Russia all wanted to trade in China
Why was The Opium War fought between China and Britain?
The British were selling Opium to China. China wanted then to stop. Britain won and gained Hong Kong. China became more open to trade
What did the Opium War and the Boxer Rebellion have in common?
It was a civil revolt against the Emperor Dowager Cixi; against all foreigners
What was the Meiji Era? Why is it significant (for Japan)?
A modernizing of Japan. Rapid industrialization and economic growth. It was the beginning of Japan becoming a world leader
What parts of the world did the British control?
Britain had colonies in all parts of the world
What is Nationalism?
Pride and love for one’s country
What did the Africans have to give up after the Europeans took over?
Their religious and cultural heritage
