It would give the U.S. access to new markets and goods that their country could not produce. Ex: Sugarcane in Cuba was abundant
There was an overproduction and under-consumption, and they were competing economily with European Powers. Ex: Spain

They would have more Naval Bases and with a huge navy already, would not have a hard time making it to conquer these other territories.

The U.S. had the idea of Nationalism, basically meaning that they saw themselves as superior to other country’s and took deep pride in their homeland, giving them the “right” to expand.

It is the idea of survival of the fittest, but socially. It basically means that people will thrive because they are inherently better, and ones that are inherently weaker will fall out of society and die out. This made the U.S. believe that’s the weaker countries would literally die out without the help of a colonizer country.

Yellow Journalism was the overexxaderation of facts that were put into the media that persuaded Americans to have beliefs about certain un-confirmed issues. Ex: USS Maine`

The USS Maine was blown up in Havana Cuba and American Navy soldiers were killed. The U.S. blamed the whole thing on Spain through Yellow Journalism and called them out without any proof.

America gained control of the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from Spain. This was settled in yet another treaty of Paris, and Cuba was excluded by America in taking part in this, causing decisions to be made that were slightly uncalled for, so yeah.
