- Sent Henry Stanley to the Congo for exploration and to arrange treaties
- Known for finding Livingstone
- He owned the Congo and used it for personal wealth, as it wasn’t a Belgium colony then
- Sparked interest in Britain, France, and Germany

- Found out their bullets were soaked in pig and cow fat
- Thought it was a direct threat

- Totally closed to outsiders until 1853
- The United States sent Commodore Matthew Perry to open trade
- To resist imperialism, they adopted western ideas and was modernized in less than 50 years

- 1899: Chinese nationalists known as “The Boxers” began a rebellion against foreigners
- 1900: They declared death on all foreigners; they killed diplomats and their families
- In August, they were stopped by an international force

Controlled over half of India by the mid 1800s and demanded that Indian soldiers had to serve in their army during the Sepoy Rebellion
