One country’s domination of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region.

Social Darwinism: Europeans felt superior to other civilzations (superior society), domination of inferior society was natures way of improving the human species

- Missionaries, doctors, officials believe they had a duty to spread the “blessings” of Western civilization (Christianity, law, medicine)

- slave trade largely depleted Africa of men able to resist Imperialism

- strong economies = funding
- well organized governments, armies, navies
- superior technlogies: riverboats, telegraphs, medicine

Direct Rule (colony):
(France)

- French officials and soldiers moved to colonies and oversaw all aspects of society
- Colonial subjects were treated as second class citizens (in their own land)

Indirect Rule (protectorate) :

- small number of British officials in control under leadership of (viceroy): appointed colonial ruler by by mother country

- the conquering empire would not directly control a nation or region
- empire would claim exclusive trading rights or investment opportunities in specific places within defeated nation

- powerful business interests control more of the economy than government
- local rulers are in charge, but under threat of military intervention if economic interests are disrupted
