• they also make up 80% of violent crimes committed ( but equally are more likely to be on the receiving end)

• Prisons arguably impact women more as they are often primary care-givers (63 vs 17%)
• women make up only 15% of violent crime committed
• due to stigma women are treated differently in court, their crimes explained in psychopathological terms
• small amount of women criminals = inadequate non-custodial/custodial provisions
• women in prison in the UK are more likely than men to experience mental health problems, with 78% of women in prison reporting mental health issues compared to 63% of men in prison ( prison reform trust) also more likely to attempt suicide and have pasts of abuse
