Impact of war on fishing and agriculture Flashcards
Uniforms
Sheep farmers did well as the army bought large stocks of wool to make soldiers’ uniforms
Fishing boats turned into mine sweepers
Some fishing boats were converted into mine sweepers looking for sea mines, which meant fewer fish were caught
U-Boats
German U-Boats patrolled the North Sea, which meant fishing was not allowed along the East Coast causing economic hardship
Farmers volunteering
Shortages of farm labourers as many men joined up, so food was in short supply
Navy taking fishing boats
Fishing boats procured by the Royal Navy for military service made it harder to collect as much fish due to a lack of equipment
Loss of trade
Much of Scotlands fish was sold to Russia and Germany. Trade with Germany was banned during the war, and getting fish to Russia was dangerous. Resulted in a loss of earnings and income.
