- Loss of rights- Mob games outlawed
- Urbanisation led to loss of space for mob games
- Increased population led to poor hygiene
- Longer working hours led to loss of leisure time
- Low incomes , people couldn’t afford to take time off
- Lack of public provision meant there was a lack of facilities, equipment and space

- Provision of “penny baths” led to improved hygiene
- Increase in wages led to increased spectatorship
- Broken-time payments and Half-Day Saturday led to increased free time for sport
- Industrial patronage and factor teams led to increased participation
- Improved communication led to increased following with sport (radios,newspapers)
- Improvements in transport led to the formation of tournaments and also increased spectatorship (rail, canal, roads)
