Immunology Flashcards
What are the 2 types of immunity
- Innate immunity
- Adaptive immunity
What makes up adaptive immunity
Tcells
B cells
What make up innate immunity
Physical barriers
Blood borne cells
Name the blood borne cells
Neutrophils Macrophages Basophils Eosinophils Natural Killer cells
Describe the speed of innate and adaptive immunity
innate= fast (hours/days) Adaptive= slow (days/weeks)
Describe the duration of innate and adaptive immunity
innate= short (days) adaptive= long (months/years)
List the cells of the innate immune system
Neutrophil Eosinophil Basophil NK cell Mast cells Antigen presenting cells
List the cells that make up the adaptive immune system
Lymphocytes (T, B,memory)
Plasma cells
Antigen presenting cells
List examples of antigen presenting cells
Monocyte
Macrophage
B lymphocyte
Dendritic cell
Describe Neutrophils
- Short lived
- First leukocyte migrating to infection site
- Are phagocytic
Describe Monocyte/ Macrophage
- Phagocytes
- Monocyte= circulates in blood and differentiate into macrophage after migrating into tissues
- Macrophages= act as antigen presenting cells
Describe Eosinophil
- Circulates in blood
- Protective role against parasites
Describe Basophil
Circulates in blood
Response to allergens (releases histamine)
Describe Mast cells
- Found within tissue, role in inflammation
- Response to allergens (releases histamine)
Describe NK cells
Natural Killer cells
Is a cytotoxic lymphocyte
Role in destruction of virus infected cells
