Immunology Flashcards
Cell-Mediated Immunity
Involves direct cellular response to invasion as opposed to antibodies
Cytotoxic T-cells wipe out cells that are infected by a virus
Humoral Immunity
Immunity involving antibodies
Plasma Cell
Cell that produces antibodies and functions in the elimination of any cell containing on its surface the antigen that it has been summoned to kill
Antigen
A molecule that is foreign to our bodies and causes our immune system to respond
Helper T cells
Assist in the activation of B Cells
Recognize foreign antigen on the surface of phagocytic cells and bind to these cells
They then multiply to produce a bunch of T cells that pump out chemical signals, which cause the B cells to respond
Cytotoxic T cells
The main cells involved in cell-mediated immunity
They recognize cells that productive viral antigens and wipe them out.
T cells
Mature in the thymus
Two main types: helper T cells and cytotoxic T cells
B cells
Mature in the bone marrow
Two main types” plasma cells and memory B cells
Phagocytes
Immune cells (macrophages and neutrophils) that use endocytosis to engulf and eliminate foreign invaders
Lysozyme
Enzyme that can kill germs before they have a chance to take hold
Present in saliva and tears
Nonspecific Immunity
Nonspecific prevention of the entrance of invaders into the body
