Immunoglobulins Flashcards
What is an Immunoglobulin?
Antibody
Protein that contains Antigen binding sited
Where are antibodies produced?
Plasma Cells which are produced by B Lymphocytes
List the five classes of Immunoglobulins
IgM
IgG (4 subclasses)
IgA (2 subclasses)
IgE
IgD
How do we refer to the bottom portion of an Antibody and what is it used for?
Fc (Fragment, Crystallized)
Determines class of Antibody
Ability for Placenta Passage
Interacts with Complement
Classical Pathway
What is the most abundant Antibody found in blood plasma?
IgG
Monomer Structure (4 subclasses)
70%-75% of total Ig
What is the function of IgG?
Acts on bacteria, fungi, and viruses
Ability to cross Placenta
What is IgM and it’s function?
First responder to Antigenic stimuli
Produced by Underdeveloped Immune System of the Neonates
What is IgA and where is it made?
Two subclasses
10% - 15% of total Serum Ig
Made by Plasma cells in the gut
Classified by Location (Serum/Secretory)
What is the function of IgA?
Found in many body fluids
Secretory Unit: allows for transport across Mucosal Epithelium
Resistant to Enzyme Degradation
What is most associated with Allergic and Anaphylactic Reactions?
IgE
Binds to Mast cells
Monomer structure
What tends to be part of the IgM class?
Cryoglobulins
Why do we care about Cryoglobulins?
Precipitate at lower than body temperature
Results in Vasculitis and Ischemic Injury
