Immunodeficiency Flashcards
What is the function of B lymphocytes?
Secrete antibodies - humoral immunity
What is the function of killer T lymphocytes?
Cell cytotoxicity- cellular immunity.
What is the function of helper T cells?
Secrete growth factors (cytokines). Help B and T lymphocytes.
What is the function of suppressor T lymphocytes?
Damp down immune response
What two results can an antibody:antigen complex have?
> Cell Lysis
> Phagocytosis
How does an antigen:antibody complex cause cell lysis?
Activating complement system
How does an antigen:antibody complex enhance phagocytosis?
> Microbe agglutination
Neutralisation - blocking viral sites
Precipitating dissolved antigens
What does Perforin do?
Punch holes into an infected cell membrane
How do primary immunodeficiencies arise?
Genetic defects
What is Chronic granulomatous disease?
When phagocytes cannot kill some bacteria/fungi
What can chronic granulomatous disease lead to?
> Pneumonia > Swollen lymph nodes > Gingivitis > Non-malignant granulomas > IBD
What is the most common X linked mutation causing CGD?
GP9LIOS
What is X-linked agammaglobulinaemia?
B cell defect.
What does X-linked agammaglobulinaemia cause?
Loss of antibody secretion
Why is X-linked agammaglobulinaemia diagnosed at 1/2?
Materal IgG covers baby for 1/2 years.
