Immuno, III- Week 4 (Hepatology) Flashcards
Name the three categories of autoimmune liver disease
Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH)
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC)
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
Define Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC)
Chronic condition in which inflammation causes scarring of both intrahepatic bile ducts
Define Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
Condition that affects both the intrahepatic and extrahepatic structures.
What is the consequence to the liver in Primary Billiary Cholangitis?
Bile duct damage, liver tissue scarring then liver failure
What is the pathogenesis of Primary Biliary Cholangitis
initiated through molecular mimicry due to breakdown in tolerance.
T-cell mediated injury that damages biliary epithelial cells. Fibrosis forms in the intrahepatic bile ducts
What are the symptoms of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?
Fatigue Abdomen pain Itching Jaundice Chronic right upper right quadrant pain
what is the common outcome of primary sclerosing cholangitis?
Vitamin deficiency
What is the pathogenesis of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
T cells attacking bile duct epithelial tissue, causing inflammation.
Cholangiocyte cells die, leading to fibrosis with a bead appearance
What are autoimmune liver diseases diagnosed?
Clinical findings
Histological abnormalities
Elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase
Elevated alanine aminotransferase
IgG serum increase
presence of one or more characteristic autoantibodies
what autoantibodies are found in Primary Biliary Cholangitis
Anti-AMA, AMA-M2, gp210
what autoantibodies are found in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
anti-p-ANCA
