Immunity and Microorganism Flashcards
Can you see a virus with a light microscope
No only a electron microscope.
What does gram staining determine?
A negative gram stain test means that there are no bacteria present. A positive gram stain indicates the presence of bacteria.
Protein shell of virus
Capsid
Attachment - virus attaches itself to the host cell
Injection - the virus inserts its genetic material into the host cell.
Replication - the host cell builds parts of the virus
Assembly - the cell assembles the replicated parts into progeny viruses
Lysis - the cell breaks open and each replicated virus can now infect other cells
Steps of Lytic Cycle
Can cigarette cause a disease
Yes, smoking has been proven to be a leading cause of coronary heart disease. Even secondary smoking raises your risk of getting the disease.
of or relating to disease caused by antibodies or lymphocytes produced against substances naturally present in the body.
Autoimmune disease
How does the Lytic cycle differ from the lysogenic cycle?
Lytic:
Viral DNA destroys Cell DNA, takes over cell functions and destroys the cell, replicates and produces progeny phages, and has symptoms of viral infection.
Lysogenic:
Viral DNA merges with Cell DNA and does not destroy the cell, does not produce progeny, and does not have symptoms of viral infection.
What are the 3 bacteria types?
Bacilli(rod), cocci(circular), and spirilla(spiral).
Why do we put food in the fridge?
Bacteria thrive in warm places, so putting it in the fridge slows down the microbes that spoil food.
a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Pathogens
What is lichen made of?
It is an organism that comes from algae or cyanobacteria living in filaments of a fungus in a symbiotic relationship.
What do bacteriophages infect?
Bacteria
