Immune System Antibodies Flashcards
What are antibodies
Antigen binding proteins
Where are antibodies present?
B cell membranes
What happens when an antigen interacts with a membrane bound antibody?
An antigen specific proliferation of B cells occur ( plasma)
Where do plasma secreted antibodies circulate?
Blood
What do antibodies secreted by plasma do?
They serve as effectors of humeral immunity and neutralise antigens and mark them for elimination
What are heterogeneous antibodies?
Antibodies that are produced against a specific antigen
Where are antibodies present?
In the serum fraction of blood
How many peptide chains does an antibody have and what are they called
They have 4 peptide chains, two heavy and two light
What binds the heavy and light chains
Disulphide bonds
How many amino acids do light chains have?
214
How many amino acids to heavy chains have?
446
What shows the most variation on both chains?
CDR’s
What do CDR’s do?
They make up the antigen binding sites of the body
What does mercaptoethanol do?
It breaks disulphide bonds
What does the two FAB fragments do?
They bind to both heavy and light chains
