Immune System Flashcards
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
Leukocytes
White blood cells
Mast cells
derived from leukocytes, migrate to tissue, release histamine to increase permeability to neutrophils
Macrophages
monocytes in tissues that consume foreign pathogens and cancer cells
Eosinophil
release toxins to kill bacteria but damage tissues
Neutrophils
first responders to infection/trauma, releases toxins and recruits other cells
Basophil
defend against parasites, release histamines that cause allergic reactions
B Lymphocyte
humoral-mediated immunity (fluid in lymph organs), can differentiate into plasma cells and secrete antibodies
T lymphocyte
cell-mediated immunity, destroy foreign organisms, include killer, helper, and suppressor T cells
Natural killer cell
kills tumor cells and virus infected cells
Barriers
skin, mucous membrane antibacterial secretions (mouth, esophagus), specialized cells (cilia)
Innate
front line troops, cannon fodder, contain or kill invading organisms, activate other defenses
Aquired
cell-mediated/humor, production of antibodies (proteins that target antigens and lymphocytes)
Innate cell types
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, macrophases, mast cells
Aquired/cell-mediated/humoral cell types
T, B, natural killer cells, memory B cells, plasma cell
