Immune & Lymphatic Systems Flashcards
What Are The Three Categories Of Microorganisms ?
Eukaryotes
Prokaryotes
Acellular Organisms
What Is An Example of Prokaryotes ?
Bacteria are all examples of prokaryotes.
What are some eukaryotic microorganisms ? some fungi, some algae, yeasts
some fungi, some algae, yeasts.
What are acellular organisms ?
All viruses are acellular organisms.
What are some safe locations for normal/resident flora?
Mouth, Vagine, GI Tract, Skin, Urethra (external opening), Upper respiratory mucosa, external ear, external eye
What’s the main difference with transient flora vs normal flora?
Transient may spend some time on the human body, but are not permanent residents, but in normal they can be constantly there
What is Innate (non-specific) immunity?
provides generalized first and second line defenses against any type of pathogen.
What is Adaptive (specific) immunity?
provides a third line of defense against specific pathogens, which it can ‘remember’ after an initial encounter.
What do self antigens include?
Self-antigens include all antigens specific to a genetically unique individual.
What are foreign antigens ?
any antigen not normally found in a particular individual organism.
What are Neutrophils job?
Phagozise/digest/destroy bacteria and some fungi and viruses
What are the job of eosinophils ?
Attack parasitic worms and involved in allergic and asthmatic reactions
What’s the job of T Lymphocytes?
Attack and destroy viral infected body cells and tumour cells
What’s the job of Basophils?
Stimulate vasodilation and attract other WBC to areas of infection and inflammation
What are B Lymphocytes ?
Produce antibodies which identify and mark foreign antigens for destruction
