Immune Disorders 1- Immune Responses Flashcards
What is immunity?
The body’s ability to resist disease
What functions does immunity serve?
Defense
Homeostasis
Surveillance
What are the TWO primary lymphoid organs?
Bone Marrow
Thymus gland
What does the Thymus gland produce?
B and T cells
What does bone marrow produce?
Leukocytes
What is the innate immunity?
The immunity that you’re born with
What is the adaptive immunity?
The immunity that you acquire after birth
What are the differences between innate and adaptive immunity?
Innate:
NON SPECIFIC because the protective response is the same regardless of causative agent
Acquired:
SPECIFIC
Slower response and generates memory
What are the three phagocytes?
Monocytes
Macophages
Neutrophils
Describe the function of monocytes
Located in the blood and go into the tissue and mature into macrophages
Describe the function of macrophages
Monitor for foreign invaders and destroy them
Describe the function of neutrophils
FIRST phagocyte at site of injury
Most numerous and most efficient of the phagocytic cells
What is an antigen?
A foreign substance that elicits an immune response from the body
Non self cell
What are the FOUR types of acquired specific immunity?
Active Natural- Chicken pox
Active Artificial- Immunizations
Passive Natural- Mom to child
Passive Artificial- Give immunoglobulins to patient
What are the TWO Ig of humoral mediated response?
IgG and IgM
