HIV Flashcards
What is the normal WBC count?
4,000-11,000 uL
When WBC count is low this indicates?
Immunosuppression
When WBC count is high, this indicates?
Infection
What are the three distinction of metastasis?
Localized
Disseminated
Systemic
What are the symptoms of SIRS?
Two of more of the following: WBC > 12,000/uL + 10% bands 100.4 F or 96.8F (lower temp happens in elderly and immunosuppressed) Tachycardia (>100) Tachypnea (>20)
What should you do if you suspect an infection?
Do a pan culture
What is a pan-culture?
Culture everywhere possible to get a potential source of infection
What is the cause of HIV?
Retrovirus that causes immunosuppression
What is the pathophysiology of HIV?
HIV directly infects CD4+ T-cell. The viral HIV binds to CD4 protein and CCR5 to cause infection by injection of viral protein. Replication of the viral DNA occurs
What is a viral load?
It is the amount of HIV virus in the blood
What are means of transmission of HIV?
Vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Injection of drugs. Breast milk. Risk behavior
What are the acute symptoms of HIV?
Flu-like symptoms
General malaise
What are the asymptomatic symptoms of chronic HIV?
Feel fine
CD4 is above 500/uL
Viral load is low
What are the symptomatic symptoms of chronic HIV?
CD4 cells are 200-500/uL
Viral load is high
Thrush is present
Oral hairy leukoplakia
Describe the transition HIV to AIDs
CD4 t-cells are below 200/uL
Viral load is high
