Deontological ethics
Sense of duty. Elevates man about himself. Connects him with an order of things. Morality not based in feelings
Three requirements for moral action
1) moral action must be done from duty not inclination
2) the principle behind an action to act with a good will is more important than the consequences deriving from it
3) duty is the necessity of acting from respect for the law
The categorical imperative
Act only on that law whereby you can at the same time that should become a universal law. Rational person obligated to follow guide and test for action and behavior.
Ex: man lying toget a loan
Categorical imperative
Action conceived as good in itself and conforms to reason. Is absolute, commands you to do something regardless of consequence of ones personal inclinations or desires
Morality
He thought what is moral for one person has to be moral for another at all times.
Is there anything good
Yes the only good thing is the good will. Even if nothing happens or bad consequences it can still be good.
Good will two step process
Act must be done from duty to have moral worth.
Do not choose anything based on inclinations or passions.
Universal law
Act as if every action will become a universal law. Focus on the whole and not the me.
We are the authors of morality. based on our choices and how they effect everyone
