IMHA Flashcards
What is primary hemostasis
Platelets (number and function) and formation of a platelet plug
What is secondary hemostasis?
Formation of a fibrin mesh that stabilizes the platelet plug
What sets off primary hemostasis?
Damage to the endothelium of a blood vessel
- vWF and GP1 released from collagen causing platelets to adhere
- Platelets stimulated to release ADP, TxA1, vWF
T/F: Platelet activation recruits more platelets
True
What defects in primary hemostasis can occur?
- Decreased platelets/thrombocytopenia
- Poorly functional platelets
- Lack of vWF (platelet and collagen derived)
What defects in secondary hemostasis can occur?
Lack of or defects in any of the cogulation factors
What are the clinical signs of primary hemostatic defects?
- Petechia
- Ecchymosis
- Oozing from mucosal sites
What are the clinical signs of secondary hemostatic defects?
- Bleeding into a body cavity
- Large SQ hematomas
T/F: Severe primary and secondary coagulopathies often have the same or similar clinical presentations.
True
