IMFA Flashcards
1
Q
what are intramolecular forces?
A
- bonds inside a molecule
- bonds such as ionic, covalent, and metallic
- generally the stronger bond
2
Q
what are intermolecular forces?
A
- bonds between multiple molecules
- attraction
- generally the weaker one
3
Q
TYPES OF IMFA
- between polar molecules
- partial charges get attracted to the opposite partial charge of another molecule
- “opposites attract”
ex: HCl
in HCl, the partially positive hydrogen atom of one HCl molecule is attracted to the partially negative chlorine atom of another
A
dipole-dipole interaction
4
Q
TYPES OF IMFA
- strongest interaction
- between polar molecules containing H chemically bonded to flourine, oxygen, or nitrogen
ex: water
water has hydrogen bonds, which is why it has a high boiling point for a small molecule
A
H-bonding
5
Q
TYPES OF IMFA
- weakest imfa
- occurs between non-polar molecules
- weak force that results from temporary shifts in the density of electrons in the electron cloud
- becomes partially negative and partially positive
- temporary force of attraction
- easier to break dowm
- the shape will be disorted
ex: methane and noble gases like neon
A
london dispersion force
