IMFA Flashcards

1
Q

what are intramolecular forces?

A
  • bonds inside a molecule
  • bonds such as ionic, covalent, and metallic
  • generally the stronger bond

Q

TYPES OF IMFA

  • between polar molecules
  • partial charges get attracted to the opposite partial charge of another molecule
  • “opposites attract”

ex: HCl
in HCl, the partially positive hydrogen atom of one HCl molecule is attracted to the partially negative chlorine atom of another

A

dipole-dipole interaction

Q

TYPES OF IMFA

  • strongest interaction
  • between polar molecules containing H chemically bonded to flourine, oxygen, or nitrogen

ex: water
water has hydrogen bonds, which is why it has a high boiling point for a small molecule

Q

TYPES OF IMFA

  • weakest imfa
  • occurs between non-polar molecules
  • weak force that results from temporary shifts in the density of electrons in the electron cloud
  • becomes partially negative and partially positive
  • temporary force of attraction
  • easier to break dowm
  • the shape will be disorted

ex: methane and noble gases like neon

A

london dispersion force
