When and why is an ultrasound scan used?
External - view unborn baby
Internal/ transvaginal/ transrectal - view prostate gland/ ovaries/ womb
✅no radiation, Great internal detail of structure
- need to inject saline to view Fallopian tubes
When and why is an MRI used?
Birth defects, injury/ trauma pelvic area, pain lower abdo/ pelvis, difficulties urinating or defacating, suspected cancer, infertility, irregular bleeding, undescended testicle, lumps in testicle
✅no radiation, shows changes in tissue quality
❌can’t have metal, allergic reaction to contrast dye, claustrophobic, takes a while, non-emergency
When and why is fluoroscopy used?
x-ray image live on a monitor
Hysterosalpinograohy (look at womb and Fallopian tubes), investigate miscarriages
-radiation, allergy to contrast
When and why is a CT scan used?
pelvic Tumours, pelvic pain,
-radiation, dye allergy
