What is imagery?
Imagery is a visually descriptive enhancer to a story. (Simile, metaphor, hyperbole)
What is the difference between literary devices and elements of literature?
Elements of literature (settings, characters) are in every story, while literary devices (simile, hyperbole) are not necessary, but used to enhance it.
What is the difference between literal and figurative language?
Literal language is the dictionary definition for ‘terms’, while figurative language use words or expressions with a meaning different from the literal language.
Simile
Comparison of 2 or more objects using like or as. (He was like a sad clown)
Metaphor
Comparison of 2 or more objects NOT using like or as. (The night was a black cat.)
Personification
Gives life to inanimate objects, or gives animals human like characteristics. (The floor moaned.)
Idiom
Words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally. Every language has its own idioms. (Break a leg!)
Hyperbole
A great exaggeration. (I’ve told you a million times!)
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor that is developed through several lines of writing, or an entire piece. (To Kill A Mockingbird)
