Sickness is deviance because you stop contributing to society
Rights:
- to be exempt from certain activities and responsibilities
- not to be held responsible for sickness
- to expect assistance from others
Obligations:
- desire to get out of ‘sick role’ as quick as possible
- seek appropriate care and comply with advice given
What is medicalisation thesis?
Medical profession is defining more and more conditions and behaviours as medical issues that require intervention - extending power and dominance over our lives
What is iatrogenesis?
Harmful and detrimental effects of medical interventions
Three types:
1. Clinical iatrogenesis
- Social iatrogenesis
- Cultural iatrogenesis
What is clinical iatrogenesis?
Direct harm from treatments, medical accidents or negligence
10% of in-patients suffer some form of clinical iatrogenesis
What is social iatrogenesis?
Medicalisation promotes blind belief in medical expertise and consumption of medical products - people no longer take responsibility for their health
what is cultural iatrogenesis?
Medicalisation robs people of their ability to cope with ‘normal’ conditions that cause pain or suffering - turn to medical treatment because ‘unable to suffer their own reality’
Experiences once seen as a normal part of life (childbirth, pregnancy, unhappiness, ageing, dying) have now been brought under medical scrutiny and control
