psoas major

A

Located deep to the abdomen

Proximal Attch: sides of T12-L5 vertebrae &
associated intervertebral discs

Distal Attch: lesser trochanter of femur

Action: hip flexion
lumbar spine flexion

Fiber direction: inferolateral

Palpation:
Start at umbilicus
Move laterally from midline (halfway)
both hands @ 45degrees push until you hit a muscle plateau

Activate muscle:
Pillow the knee
ask partner to lift knee.

Proximal Attch: iliac fossa

Distal Attch: lesser trochanter of femur

Action: hip flexion
pelvic anterior tilt

Fiber direction: fan-shaped

Palpation:
Locate ASIS off of the iliac crest

Activate.

Distal Attch: proximal anteromedial tibia (pes anserinus tendon)

Action: hip flexion
hip abduction
hip lateral rotation
knee flexion
knee medial rotation

Fiber direction: inferomedial
