Large muscle located in the buttock.

Proximal Attch: external & posterior surface of ilium, posterior surface of sacrum & coccyx, sacrotuberous ligament

Distal Attch: IT band (3/4 of fibers), gluteal tuberosity (1/4 of fibers)

Action: hip extension
hip lateral rotation
hip abduction

Fiber direction: inferolateral

Palpation/ Activate: Partner on stomach
Locate the edge of the sacrum, PSIS Locate Gluteal fold

gluteus medius

Answer 2

Fan shaped muscle situated laterally to the hip

Proximal Attch: external ilium (anterior 2/3rds)

Distal Attch: lateral surface of greater trochanter

Action: Prime mover_hip abduction
pelvic support
anterior fibers: hip medial rotation, flexion
posterior fibers: hip lateral rotation, extension

Fiber direction: fan-shaped

Palpation:
Locate ASIS along iliac crest

Activate:

tensor fascia lata + ( IT band)

Answer 3

Small superficial muscle located lateral side (upper thigh)

Proximal Attch: Iliac crest ASIS

Distal Attch: IT band (1/3 down thigh)

Action: hip flexion
hip abduction
hip medial rotation

Fiber direction: inferolateral

Palpation/ Activate : partner on back
Locate the ASIS
Ask partner to medially rotate the hip
Muscle will bulge as it contracts
