- Paris challenges Menelaus to a duel but loses heart when he steps forwards
- Hector tells him off for his cowardice
- Iris tells Helen to visit the walls of the city where she identifies the Greek hero’s
- Paris is losing the duel and Aphrodite saves him
- Agamemnon declares Menelaus the winner
- there is a temporary truce

- Zeus suggests peace between the Greeks and Trojans, Athene and Hera refuse
- Athene persuades Pandarus to break the truce
- He injures Menelaus
- Agamemnon surveys his troops rebuking Odysseus and Diomedes and praising Ajax and Nestor

A
- Greeks overwhelm the Trojans
- Menelaus considers accepting a ransom for Adrestus but is convinced to kill him by Menelaus
- Nestor spurs on the Greeks
- Helenus asks Hector to approach Hecube and tell her to pray to Athene
- Diomedes and Glachus realise their grandfathers knew each other.
- Hector visits Andromache on the wall and Astynax is frightened by him
- Andromache mourns his impending death
- Hector and Pairs meet at gate and prepare to fight

- The Greeks are in a state of panic about the Trojans success in battle
- Agamemnon calls for an assembly suggesting they flee
- Diomedes is annoyed and says he will stay alone if he had to
- Nestor suggests embassy to Achilles
- Agamemnon agrees and offers gifts
- Ajax, Odysseus and Pheonix
- Achilles refuses to return after showing good hospitality
- Diomedes makes speech condemning Achilles stubbornness

Book 10 events
A
- Agamemnon and Menelaus can’t sleep over concern with Trojans and wake other leaders and meet in no mans land
- Nestor suggests night raid, Diomedes and Odysseus volunteer
- Hector had same idea and Dolon volunteers asking for Achilles chariot
- Odysseus and Diomedes question him and then kill him (dolon)
- Diomedes kills 12 sleeping Thracians and Rhesus. Odysseus clears bodies and drives both men away after warning from Athene.
- The men return, cleanse themselves and honour Athene

- Patroclus approaches Achilles crying and begs to fight
- Achilles give him armour and prays to Zeus
- Zeus grants he will win glory but not return
- Patroclus kills and mocks Sarpedon
- Apollo recovers Sarpedons body taking it to Lycia
- Patroclus tries to climb walls of Troy 4 times and is stopped by Apollo
- Patroclus kills Hectors chariot driver with a stone and mocks him
- Apollo stuns him and strips his armour
- Euphorbus wounds him and runs away
- Hector finishes him off taunting him
- Patroclus claims Gods killed him and predicts Hectors death

- Zeus remarks that Hectors triumph will be short lived
- Hector promises half the war spoils to whoever gets Patroclus’ body
- Zeus gives Hector power
- Menelaus and Ajax’s force Trojans back
- Aeneas rallies Trojans but can win back corpse
- Athena inspires Menelaus disguised as Pheonix and Apollo inspired Hector
- Zeus allows Patroclus’ body to be saved

- Achilles hears of Patroclus and is mourning him. Vows to kill Hector
- Thetis offers him new armour
- Achilles appears on battle field and scares away Trojans with cry
- At assembly, Hector vows to stay outside walls and fight
- Achilles laments Patroclus and predicts his own death
- Hera gloats to Zeus that Greeks will win with Achilles
- Thetis asks Hephaestus for new armour

- Hector is killed and predicts Achilles death

- Patroclus appears to him in a dream telling him to bury him
- The Greeks cremate his body with pyre and ceremony
- Achilles presides over Patroclus funeral games
- after some arguments over winners, prizes are given out

- Achilles perpetuates further outrages on Hectors body
- Zeus sends Thetis to convince him to accept a ransom from Priam
- Zeus sends Iris to tell Priam to offer ransom
- Hecube is worried but is convinced by eagle
- Hermes guides Priam to Achilles hut
- Priam reminds Achilles of his own father
- Initially angry but then relents, Achilles agrees to give back body
- Two share a meal and Priam is given bed
- Hermes wakes Priam and tells him to leave before Greeks find him
- Priam returns to Troy
- Women lament Hectors body and funeral games take place
