Iipids Flashcards
FUNCTIONS OF LIPIDS
● Energy Storage
● Temperature Regulation
● Hormone Regulation
● Brain Function
● Organ Protection
● Insulation and Protection
● Vitamin Absorption
● Cell Membrane Structure
● Chemical Messengers
LIPIDS came from the Greek word
“lipos” which means
Fat
What are the monomer of
LIPIDS?
Glycerol and fatty acid
These are substances
that include fats and
fat-like substances
such as phospholipids,
waxes, steroids, and
others.
Phospholipid Bilayer
occur in the liquid state at room
temperature and are mostly found in
plants. Believed to be healthier than
saturated fats.
Unsaturated Fatty Acid
There are 2 types of Fatty Acids:
Unsaturated and saturated
are solid at room temperature and mostly
found in animals. There are no double
bonds in its structure.
Saturated
means water-loving
● having an affinity for water;
● capable of interacting with water through
hydrogen bonding.
● Greek word hydros, meaning “water” and
philia, meaning “friendship”.
Hydrophilic
● are mainly composed of carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen.
● Their main functions are to store and
produce energy.
Lipids
● means lacking an affinity for water
● insoluble in water
● repelling water
Examples of hydrophobic molecules include
alkanes, oils, fats, and greasy substances in
general.
