Accent definition
The way a person speaks, the difference in sounds that can show the place a person comes from, or their social class. E.g. RP accent
Dialect definition
A variety of language that is spoken by a group in a particular area of a social group or class. It can have a different accent and pronunciations vocabulary and use different grammatical structures. E.g. standard English
Prescriptivism definition
Language differences are not accepted
Descriptivism definiton
Language differences are accepted
Overt prestige definition
Related to standard and “formal” language features, and expresses power and status
Covert prestige definition
The relatively high value placed towards a non-standard form of a variety in a speech community
Accommodation theory definition
Concerns the changes we make to become either more or less similar to the people we communicate with.
Upwards convergence definition
Moving up towards the standard . Where regional speaker becomes more RP speaker to show they like the RP speaker
Downwards convergence
Where an RP speaker becomes more regional to show they like it yr regional speaker.
Prestige definition
When you change your speech to gain prestige/status - appearing to have a high reputation/status/success etc - but do so in different ways.
Elaborated code definition
More focus on communicating facts and abstract ideas, often associated with intelligence and maturity.

What is trudgills investigation
Looked at 60 people from Norwich (random group) and divided them into classes based on occupational status, income, education etc. found higher up in his class scale a person was more likely they were use to standard language
