What is identity ?
How you see yourself including self concept and self-concept and clearly affected by how others see you and can be personal and social identity on how we are different and similar to other
Can also be a product of your experience through socialisation and formed by agents of socialisation through life
What is personal identity ?
How YOU see yourself, your interest and beliefs
What is social identity ?
How OTHERS see you
What are the seven key identities being studied ?
- Ethnicity
- Gender
- Class
- Age
- Nationality
- Sexuality
- Disability
What is ascribed identity/status ?
Something we cannot choose. E.g Race and sex they are fixed and stay the same entire life
What is achieved identity/status ?
Something we accomplished in the course of our lives can be through work and effort Or due to your profession
What is intersectionality
Different social categories that interconnect and overlap causing discrimination and disadvantage
E.g social class is more significant for those form ethnic minority and experience additional discrimination
