There are 7 requirements for conducting a Formal Visual ID procedure. They are….
M - Pictorial record (MONTAGE) prepared by officer
O - Suspect compared to no less than 7 OTHERS
R - RECORD of procedure followed + sworn to be true
P - PROCEDURE complies with relevant regulations
A - ASAP after the offence is reported
I - The offender may or may not be in the INCLUDED
N - NO INDICATION made to the person making the ID
The six good reasons for not following a formal visual procedure are:
S - identification made SOON after the offence was reported and in the course of initial investigation
I - officers could not have anticipated ID would be an issue at the trial
C - identification was made after a CHANCE MEETING
A - suspect’s APPEARANCE substantially changed
R - suspect refuses to take part in formal procedure and police don’t hold a photo or video showing true likeness
S - suspect has a singular appearance
There are four methods of identification. They are:
- Formal visual identification
- ID parade
- Photo montage
- Voice identification
- Finger, palm and foot prints
- Forensic examination
