Q

Procedures on Finding an Exhibit

A
  • do not move or touch it until you have examined it
  • consider its significance for reconstruction
  • consider photographing it in situ
  • consider whether fingerprints from it can assist your case
  • note the position you found it in
  • label it and note a brief description of it, the place, date and time it was found, and the name of the finder
  • secure it using tie-on labels, not stick-on
  • ensure the change of custody is maintained

Q

The Chain of Evidence

A

Each person who has custody of an exhibit from its location until it is produced in court makes up the chain of evidence.

If one of the steps cannot be proven, or is missing, it could raise doubt about whether the exhibit is in fact the article found at the scene, and it may not be admitted
