A
- urinary retention for example: postoperative due to not being able to void
- Monitoring fluid balance
- Management of incontinence
- surgical procedures purpose to relieve bladder pressure after surgeries.

Nursing Considerations
A
- pt ed to reduce anxiety, to understand procedure and potential risks associated.
- Securing the catheter to the pt’s thigh to minimise movement or tugging, this prevent risks of urethra trauma.
- Maintain asepsis to prevent UTI/ infections, bacterial condemnations.
- Clean insertion site (1st) plain soap & water, then (2nd) with 0.1% chlorhexidine.

Risks involved
A
- trauma to urethra as this procedure can cause physical pain and discomfort
- UTI –» introducing bacteria to the urinary tract through the catheter.
