Indications for Inter-coastal Catheter removal

A
  • ICC removal is considered when drainage is minimal or ceased.
  • Any air leak that was present disappears
  • chest x-ray shows that the lung has expanded.

Risks

A
  • pain or trauma to the patient around the insertion site
  • infections & bleeding & bruising
  • pneumothorax as a result of removal of catheter.

Nursing Considerations

A
  • request for removal must be written and documented in the pt’s health record prior to removal.
  • must review pt’s medication and discuss with medical team If required.
  • 2RN & analgesia 30 mins prior to removal procedure.
  • an x-ray post removal, Obs & document.
