Five steps before you begin the procedure
- hand hygiene
- introduce yourself
- explain the procedure and ask if they have any questions
- check their full name and DOB
- check for allergies
How do you clean the penis
Retract foreskin if present and use a swab stick starting at 12 o’clock swiping around to 12 o clock discard the swab and repeat three times
Why might you hit resistance when inserting the catheter in a male and what do you do if this happens
In particular with older men they may have an enlarged prostate
You should pull back a bit and try to insert it carefully again
If you still can’t stop the procedure and inform the doctor
How much fluid do you inflate the balloon with once you have inserted the catheter, why do you have to document this?
10 cc
If you do more or less make sure it is documented whatever you put in so that the same amount can be removed
What position should the patient be in before you perform the procedure
Supine
Why do you use a bluey
To prevent the bed sheets from getting wet
During the procedure you use two sterile sheets where are these places?
One goes on the bed between patients legs
The other goes over the groin with the hole revealing the vagina or penis
Make sure the waterproof side is face down
Do you lubricate the catheter
Yes
How long should you swab the port before you attach the empty syringe to deflate the balloon upon removal
15-20 seconds vigourously
How much fluid do you pull out when deflating the balloon on removal
How ever much was put in, check the documentation this should be about 10cc
When cleaning the female urethral area how is this done
One swipe from front to back discard and repeat 3 times make sure you get the sides
When you insert the catheter how far from the tip should you hold the tubing
Approximately 2 cm to give good control
Where do you initially insert the catheter up to before you inflate the balloon and then what do you do after you have inflated the balloon
All the way up to the y joint then inflate the balloon then slowly pull it out until you feel a gentle tug
What is put in the balloon
Approximately 10cc of sterile water
What are the signs and symptoms of a UTI with a person who has an IDC?
Fever Flank or supra-pubic discomfort Obstruction Haematuria Dysuria Sediment
