ICWS: Caphalosporins and ...many others! Flashcards
what is MOA of cephalosporins?
activate cell wall autolytic enzymes thru blocking of terminal cross-linking of peptidoglycan
are cephalosporins similar to penicilins?
Yes. chemically ..both have beta-lactam ring structure.
how is first gen. cephalosporins’ activity against G+ and G-?
good against G+ and moderate against G-
is MSSA susceptible or resistant to First gen cephalosporins?
MSSA and most G+ are susceptible, however MRSA is resistant.
can you use first gen. cephalosporins for penicillin allergic pts?
yes.
can first gen. cephalosporins be given orally?
some are acid resistant like cephalexin
are first gen. cephalosporins ß-lactamase resistance?
yes. increased ß-lactamase Resistance
how are first gen. cephalosporins excreted?
renal
what is the DOC of surgical prophylaxis?
Cefazolin (IV,IM)
what are different groups of cephalosporins?
First generation( narrow spectrum), second generation (intermediate spectrum), third generation (broad spectrum), fourth generation, “unnamed” generation
how is 2nd gen. cephalosporins activity against G+ and G-?
lower against G+ and somewhat increased against G-
do 2nd gen. cephalosporins have antipseudomonal activity?
Nope.
are 2nd gen. cephalosporins ß-lactamase Resistance?
yes. increased ß-lactamase Resistance
how are 2nd. gen. cephalosporins excreted?
mostly renal
what the prototype of 2nd gen. cephalosporins ?
cefaclor (oral)
