ICU Equipment Flashcards
arterial line
thin tube or catheter that is connected to a monitor that is typically inserted into one of the client’s arteries in the arm. This line is usually sutured in
-measures blood pressure, oxygen, and CO2 concentrations in the blood
Pulse oximeter
device placed on to the client’s fingertip and records pulse and blood-oxygen saturation
Intravenous access
delivers fluids and medications via the central or peripheral venous system
-typically located in the cephalic vein, median cubital vein, or basilic vein
intensive care monitor
TV-like screen that displays different wave forms and numbers representing BP, ICP, and EKG
Respirator/ventilator
machine that does the breathing work for the client
indwelling catheter
tube that drains urine from the bladder to an external collection bag
-need to make sure the catheter is not pinched or blocked
CVP line
thin tube that is inserted into a vein, typically the subclavian or jugular, and is used to measure venous BP
-do not allow pinching of the skin or other irritation while doing shoulder ROM
support hose
tight knee or thigh high stockings that are used to prevent DVT
tracheostomy tube
tube that is inserted into a temporary surgical opening at the front of the throat that provides access to the trachea to assist in breathing
- able to talk, drink, eat with effort
- always double check if NPO
Doppler ultrasound
usues ultrasound waves to detect blood flow
electrocardiogram
uses round electrode pads on the client’s chest and is used to monitor heart rate and rhythm
-monitor closely when changing clients’ posture
how many BPM indicates bradycardia
less than 60 BPM
how many BPM indicates tachycardia
120 BPM or higher
endotracheal tube
helps with breathing; artificial airway that passes from nose or mouth to the trachea
-unable to eat, drink, or talk
external pneumatic calf compresion
device placed around client’s calf and used to prevent DVT
