CVA Flashcards
types of stroke
ischemic
hemorragic
ischemic stroke
blocked blood flow to brain
types of ischemic stroke
thrombotic
embolic
embolic stroke
blood clot forms somewhere in the body and travels to the arteries supplying blood to the brain and disrupts blood flow
thrombotic stroke
buildup forms on the walls of one or more of the arteries supplying blood to the brain, disrupting blood flow
hemorragic stroke
bleeding in the brain
- caused by breakage of a blood vessel wall in the brain
- this bleeding increases intracranial pressure that can kill or damage brain tissue
scanning that is done to confirm stroke dx
CT other tests: ECG Chest X ray blood tests
time frame of OT referral after stroke
24-48 hours after hospital admission
-possible to see decline in fxn after initial assessment
how does neurological recovery occur after stroke?
- undamaged systems (typically those that do not have a specific function) are recruited to compensate
- shown to happen in 30 min of practice, but reverses after 30 min of nonpractice - dendrite branching and axonal sprouting (formation of new synapses)
- Active movement is important!
why is active movement important in neurological recovery?
increases cortical area in relation to limb performance
-passive movement and repetitive activity alone do not produce functional reorganization
