What are Interpersonal skills?
Methods used to communicate effectively with others
What are the different verbal communication techniques?
1) Language used (formal and technical) depending on context.
2)-Using open-ended questions to get opinions and
detail
-Using close-ended questions with options
(Avoiding leading questions which may pressure the respondent)
What barriers can affect communication?
Verbal:
-Language
-Noise
-Disability
Non-verbal:
-Distraction
-Lack of concentration
-Virtual communication
What are the different Non-verbal communication methods?
1) Body language
2) Eye contact
What are all the different ‘Written Communication’ Tools?
1) Word Processors–> best for majority written text, not for more creative tasks.
–>e.g. letters (for serious, formal communication)
–>e.g. reports (for longer, detailed communication)
2) E-mail–> Can be used to distribute to many people semi-formally.
–>e.g. emailing all employees with an attached report
3) Presentation Software–> Uses slides to communicate both text and images.
–>e.g. can be used in presentations to deliver information to many people at once.
4) Instant Messaging–> Useful for quick updates to colleagues.
–>e.g. messaging you’re colleague to let them know a location.
5) Use of the Web–> Websites can be used to give public updates.
–>e.g. a blog can be used to provide written articles
–>e.g. Vlogs can be used to provide video and audio (by for example hiring a vlogger to review you’re latest product)
What are all the ‘Personal Attributes’ needed to be ready for work?
1) Self-Motivation–> Able to keep working on difficult tasks without much outside help
2) Time-management–> Able to keep track of deadlines and not waste time
3) Dependability–> others trusting you
4) Organisational skills–> The ability to plan tasks and manage your time when working independently.
5) Problem Solving–> Working on confusing tasks
6) Punctuality
7) Leadership–> setting an example for others
8) Numerical skills–> Job-related math skills
9) Written + verbal skills–> able to express yourself
10) Follow dress codes
11) Have good personal hygiene
12) Attitude
–> respect you’re employers
–> Being responsive to feedback
What are some common job roles in IT?
1) Network Manager–> responsible for setting up and maintaining the network:
–>Requires knowledge of network hardware and software
–>Key attributes include:
problem-solving/working under pressure/Organization.
2) IT Technicians–> Setting up and maintaining the computer systems of an organization:
–>Involves troubleshooting and working with clients
–>Key attributes include Patience/Determination/Dependability.
3) Programmers–> Write code to develop software
–>Will need to know a programming language e.g. Python or Java
–>Key attributes include:
Team working/Resilience/Numerical Skills
4) Web Designers–> Create website designs which meet client requirements:
–>May involve coding the website too
–>Key attributes:
Creativity/Listening skills/Organized
5) Animators–> An artist who can create moving images
–>Usually putting a creative spin on clients’ requirements
–>Will need to be able to use animation software and hardware like graphics tablets.
–>Key attributes:
Creativity/Self-motivation
What are Professional Bodies? + what do they do?
Organisations that support the development of those working in that industry area (e.g. BCS)
They provide:
–>Training
–> Relevant news, reports, and research
–> Provide networking opportunities
(Professional bodies are NOT unions as they do not go on strike)
(They have an annual subscriptions)
What is Industry certification?
Training in a specific area that leads to a qualification
What are the advantages of Industry Certification?
-Completing them demonstrates knowledge of a technical area (improves job opportunities)
-Trainees develop experience and competency in areas relevant to actual jobs
What are the Disadvantages of Industry Certification?
-Some courses have entry requirements and fees (which can be quite expensive)
-Earning a certificate does not guarantee a better job or more money
-Classroom activities or online learning must be completed e.g. exams must be passed at the end of the course
