Icing And Freezing Levels Flashcards
1
Q
Structural icing
A
Sticks to the outside of the airplane. It occurs when supercooled water droplets strike the airframe and freeze.
2
Q
Clear ice
A
Most dangerous, it’s heavy and hard to see and covers a large area. Freezes slowly.
3
Q
RIME ice
A
Rough, milky ice. It is the most frequently reported ice. It grows when droplets rapidly freeze upon striking the aircraft.
4
Q
Mixed ice
A
A mixture of RIME and clear ice. Similar hazards as clear, causes handling and performance problems.
5
Q
Instrument icing
A
Effects instruments on the aircraft (pitot icing)
6
Q
Induction icing
A
Effects air intake of the engine (carb icing)
