Fog/Mist Flashcards
What are the types of fog?
Radiation, Advection, Upslope, Steam.
Radiation fog
Over land on calm, clear, cool nights. When radiation cooling reduces air temperature to or below its dew point.
Advection fog
When moist air moves over a cooler surface, winds are necessary. Usually in coastal areas.
Upslope fog
Moist stable air at or below its dew point, as it moves up terrain. Needs winds 5-15 mph is favorable.
Steam fog
When cold air moves over warm water.
What is frost n how does it effect the aircraft’s performance?
The air must drop at or near the dew point. Dew then accumulates on the aircraft and if the temperature is below freezing it produces frost. Dew poses no threat, but frost is a safety hazard because it disrupts flow of air over the surface effecting the ability for takeoff and creates drag.
