What does blood comprises of?
- Plasma (50-60%)
- Formed elements (40-50%) - RBC, WBC, Platelets
What is the pH of blood?
7.35 - 7.45
What are the components in plasma?
- Water (92%)
- Proteins (7%) - albumin, fibrinogens, globulin and regulatory protein
- Solutes (1%) - Organic waste, nutrients and electrolytes
What are the 3 blood cells in the body?
- Erythrocytes
- Leucocytes
- Thrombocytes
Describe RBC
Biconcave, lack nucleus, contains Hemoglobin
What are the two categories of WBC?
- Granulocytes (Neutro, Baso, Eosinophils)
- Agranulocytes (Lympo, Monocytes)
Describe Neutrophils
nucleus segmented into 3 to 5 lobes with pale granules filled cytoplasm
Describe Eosinophils
Bilobed nucleus with reddish-orange granules in cytoplasm
Describe Basophils
Deep purple/ blue granules in cytoplasm with obscured bilobed nucleus
Describe Monocytes
Large oval or kidney-shaped nucleus
Describe lymphocytes
Big nucleus with thin layer of clear cytoplasm
What is a platelet?
It is a flattened disk-like cell fragment involved in blood clotting
Describe the appearance of platelets on a blood smear stain.
Non-nucleated, purple, granular
What is/are the purpose(s) of the red bone marrow?
Hematopoiesis and removal of worn out RBC
Which of the bones does hematopoiesis occur in when one ages?
Flat or irregular
